Question: I was in the last sitting of the last raka'a of a prayer, then I started to doubt whether my sujuud (prostration) has completed two or not. What should I do in this situation?
Answer: This situation as explained by Shaykh Muhammad Bn Soolih Al-Uthaymeen (May Allaah have mercy on him) in his book "risaalatun fee sujuudu ssawh" of three situations:
1) You should try to ascertain that which is weighty on your mind, if what is weighty is that the sujuud (prostration) has completed two sujuud, then you should complete your prayer and there is no prostration of forgetfulness due from you.
2) If however what is weighty on your mind is that the sujuud is just one, then you should make one more sujuud and observe two prostrations of forgetfulness after making tasleem.
3) If however there is none that is weighty on your mind, then you should make it that which is lesser which is that you conclude that you have only made one sujuud; then you will make one more sujuud and thereafter observe two prostrations of forgetfulness before making tasleem.
Questioner: cuts in....what if the observer of the prayer was the Imaam leading a congregation and he was reminded of the mistake but he didn't understand it until he left the solaat and the mistake was explained to him after the prayer???
Me: The Imaam should simply stand up, make takbeer and bring forth one single raka'a (unit of prayer) while the congregation follows suit.
This is because the Imaam had omitted a pillar from the pillars of solaat which nullifies that last raka'a wherein the sujuud (a pillar) was omitted. Moreover, a pillar of solaat do nullifies the prayer entirely (like takbeeratul Ihraam) or a unit of the prayer (like sujuud). Also, a pillar of the prayer can't be corrected except by paying it back.
So, the Imaam will bring forth one raka'a to replace the void one (wherein sujuud was imitted) and thereafter bring forth two prostrations of forgetfulness before making tasleem (while the congregation follow him).
That's it.
